Surveys on Symbolism

This is a really cool article- to settle an argument with an English teacher, a 16 year old student in 1963 sent out about 100 surveys to serious literature heavyweights and asked them if symbolism in their work was deliberate. And a bunch of them wrote back. Some of the responses are collected in the linked piece above.
